Miryam bath Heli, in one sense of the word, was the most important person that ever lived. We know her as Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was the daughter of Heli (bath Heli). She was very young and already betrothed to be married; but she was chosen by God to be the mother of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mary must have been shocked beyond imagination when the angel Gabriel appeared in her humble dwelling in Nazareth and began to speak to her. Are You Smarter Than a Five Year Old?

I awoke this morning to find an envelope from my 5 year old labeled “To Dad” beside my head.  I was going to reach for my Bible first as is my habit, but felt that I should open his letter first.  I’m glad I did.  I spent a while just looking at the picture and marveling at the simplicity and truth in it.  I’m sharing it with you in the hopes that it will give you pause for thought.  It might be easier to print it if your screen is small. This third poem was sent in with the request to publish it “Name Withheld.”  Even as a believer, people sometimes lose sight of who they are and what God says about them.  I’m posting it here as a reminder that even in the seeming comfort of the church there are still struggles.  People with real problems attend our churches and need to know HOW to find the answer in Jesus Christ. Children and Scripture

Today, I was reading Psalm 116 to some of my children.  As is often my custom, I would read a verse and then ask a question to make sure they were listening. I got to the verse about, “You have delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.”  I asked my daughter, “What has God delivered our soul from?”    “Death.”   I asked my son what God delivered our eyes from, and he had trouble remembering that part.  While one child was “boo-hooing,” as a hint I asked my younger daughter, and she said, “Tears.”   Then I asked my son, “What did God deliver our feet from?”  He said “Falling.”  About that time my younger daughter chimed in with “Stinking!” QUESTION:  Has God delivered your feet from … Read entire article »

As I look at the snow falling outside my window, I ponder how many of our perceptions of Mary and Joseph’s situation arise from our own geographical location.
