Thoughts on Jezebel

Thoughts on Jezebel

These notes are originally from (I think) 1994-1995. Eunuch – a male who had been castrated (against his will or not) who would then be responsible to tend to the needs and/or bidding of the queen’s most intimate affairs without the threat of sexual intercourse. There are several items that we need to notice in this regard: 1.  Someone who had been mutilated for Jezebel’s benefit. 2.  May have been attracted to Jezebel at some point in the past, but lost that … Read entire article »

The Little Electric Oven

The Little Electric Oven

One Christmas, at least I think it was Christmas and not a birthday, my parents bought sister a little oven. Now, this was in the days before lawyers had become fruitful, multiplied and replenished the earth. This wasn’t a piece of plastic with stickers to put on the oven to emulate fire. Nor did it come with a few round cans made of plastic labeled as corn or beans. No, this was a little Easy … Read entire article »

The Thanksgiving That (Almost) Wasn’t

A Short Story: It started off well enough. Jan got up early to get the turkey in the oven. She had time to make a steaming hot mug of cocoa before the rest of the family stirred. She had just sat down and opened her Bible to read this morning’s passage. Then it began. There was a loud pop in the kitchen followed by an acrid smell. Jan jumped up and ran into the kitchen to see what had happened. Her nose led her straight to the oven. When she opened it, the element wasn’t glowing bright orange, and the heat was rapidly dissipating. Her first thought was, “Oh, no! Now what?” Tim’s day off from work began with Jan shaking him and telling him that … Read entire article »

What You Need to Know About Traveling in Madagascar

What You Need to Know About Traveling in Madagascar

In September 2014, I traveled with a few other people to Madagascar. The group I was with wants to do some relief and development work there. My main job was to do photography and video to document what we learned. But they were having a difficult time finding solid information about the basic information travelers would require. This first trip was intended to serve as an exploratory and information gathering trip. … Read entire article »

Windows is Ungodly and Unix is the Right Operating System

Lest I be mistaken, let me remind readers that this does fall into the “HUMOR” category, especially “Good Examples of Bad Exegesis.” But if you like this kind of stuff, read on. Someone on a list recently was writing about how God gifts people differently, including techies. They said: One of the hard lessons we learned is that God calls different people with different skills to work for Him. And He chooses the people with those skills for a purpose. The same way that He made some to be pastors, and some to be teachers, He also made some to be Windows people, and others to be Linux people (I still think the “Mac people” are a mistake… [!joking!]). I responded with this: Well put. This is, in fact, scriptural. … Read entire article »

Give the Gift of Music

What do these things have in common:  dogs barking, a wailing banshee, an industrial metal press operating at high speed and the swearing skills of a sailor?  If you guessed popular teen music, you are bang on. Before anyone gets an idea that this article is about bashing whatever happens to be popular, it’s not.  I enjoy probably as wide a range of music styles as anyone I know.  The point of this article is to help parents think about being intentional with the music their children listen to on a routine basis. The overriding scripture that comes to mind is Proverbs 29:15 which tells us that “a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.”  While this verse can be used to help us think about many areas of raising … Read entire article »

Eat, Drink and Be Mary

Eat, Drink and Be Mary

Each year we find ourselves in the largest holiday season of the year.  Each year, many of us find ourselves worn out. For most of my life, I’ve seen the tug of war between church and commerce.  I’ve read sales slogan after sales slogan.  I’ve heard sermon after skit after song on remembering the “Reason for the Season.” It’s hard to deny that we are in an extra season of tension in our country.  The economy has … Read entire article »

Fasting: Do I Wait for God to Tell Me to Fast?

We recently received this question: Q: “When people fast, do they decide when to do it or does God tell them when to do it and for how long?” A: Our initial response was that in Matthew 6, Jesus said, “When you fast,” which assumes that His disciples would fast at some point.  Some Christians practice a “fast day” per week when they fast one or more meals.  Some people fast for special times of seeking God.  Some churches fast together during times of intercession or renewal. There was a follow up question: Q: “So God doesn’t tell you when to fast?  Just that you should fast?” A: He has the option to if He wants us to.  That’s where being led of the Spirit comes in.  But if He doesn’t say, “Fast today,” it … Read entire article »
