I marvel at the wisdom of God. I’ve read through the Gospels numerous times, and I am so often amazed at the way Jesus responded to the questions and traps put before Him by the teachers of the law and other religious persons. We have heard this particular scenario over and over, and we can probably give the story to anyone who wanted to know it. But just remember again that Jesus may have heard this with His ears for the first time when it was posed to Him. So put yourself in His shoes and imagine being the one who was given this question to answer. Tough, huh?
But Jesus had a way of always dealing with the core issue. He didn’t just answer a question. He also went beyond the question to further confound the wise and to pose some heart searching questions of His own. Here Jesus tells the Sadducees that they have missed the point because they do not know God’s Word or His power. Those who obtain to the resurrection are like the angels in heaven and do not marry. But then He goes one step further and drives home the point to the Sadducees (who did not even believe in the resurrection) that there will indeed be a resurrection by declaring that God’s self-revelation to Moses shows that the saints of old still live. He IS the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, not WAS.
Whoa! What wisdom. Yes, I know He is the Son of God, but remember that the same Spirit abides in us. Remember that Jesus is the One who said we would do greater works because He went to the Father. Remember that this wisdom is available for you and me.
