Toy Soldiers and Tin Men

When I was a boy, Christmas meant a whole lot more to me than perhaps to my friends.  The reason is that I grew up poor.  I jokingly tell people that every time my Dad got a raise at work, they increased the poverty level index also.  So Christmas was that special time of the year when we received presents out of the blue. We didn’t get the really exorbitant gifts.  And we did get clothes sometimes.  But we still were delighted to receive the “abundance” of toys and games and treasures which I could use to pay off my mortgage if I had saved them to sell on Ebay nowadays. Christmas wasn’t much about giving.  True, we did give occasionally.  But on a very limited income, we kids didn’t have a … Read entire article »

The Power of Teamwork

Who are these people?  Bud Abbott.  Gracie Allen.  Tim Conway.  William Clark.  Robin.  Eve.  Ernie.  Wilbur Wright.  Moses Horowitz.  Some of the names ring a bell, while others may leave you a bit stumped looking for a clue.  Let’s try rephrasing the question with a little more information. Do you recognize any of THESE names?  Abbott and Costello.  George Burns and Gracie Allen.  Tim Conway and Don Knotts.  Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.  Batman and Robin.  Adam and Eve.  Orville and Wilbur Wright.   Moe, Larry and Curly. Suddenly our minds start recognizing the names because they are put in association with someone else who was intricately tied to their place in history.  We laugh with the 3 Stooges or The Apple Dumpling Gang.  We read about the exploits of Lewis and Clark.  … Read entire article »

Should I Follow a Spirit Guide

It was in the summer of 1990.  In about a month, I planned to be married.  Happily absorbed in pleasant thoughts like this, I was returning home from the city to the Chattanooga area from Cleveland where I was working. It was evening.  The sun was bright in the west.  Chattanooga had not yet endured the years of perpetual roadwork which eventually led to I-75 being as wide as it is now at Volkswagen Drive.  There were two lanes. As I was just about to top the hill coming from the Ooltewah side down into Chattanooga, a voice inside clearly spoke, “Switch lanes.”  I was traveling in the fast lane that evening, and without hesitation, I switched to the right lane.  After clearing the hill, I looked in horror as a car … Read entire article »

A Merry Heart

A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones. (Proverbs 17:22) If you’ve been around church at all, you’ve probably heard that our hearts have a “God-shaped hole” and that we need a relationship with the Father to fill it. That’s the truth. The problem is a lot of Christians still have heart issues, even though they’ve accepted Jesus into their lives. Did I say “a lot of Christians?” If we’re honest, we all do. Whilst I wholeheartedly believe in the complete work of Jesus at the cross and through His resurrection; I also acknowledge that we are works in progress; there is a process involved in becoming the people God has made us. A lot of that process is worked out through our choices. Primarily, whether or not we … Read entire article »

Why Do Parents Call Their Children Bad Names?

“Monday’s child is fair of face.  Tuesday’s child is full of grace. Wednesday’s child is …”  Do you remember the next part?  If you were born on Wednesday, perhaps you do.  “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”  And so on goes the little poem that most people have heard at least once.  That rhyme carries little real weight in our culture, but it carries an even more important message.  Names and stereotypes really do matter. I know someone whom we’ll call Brett (not his real name) who was raised by an abusive father.  As he grew up, he consistently was told that he was stupid, worthless, a retard and other vile names.  Hurt and confused, Brett began trying to find relief from pain in drugs and alcohol as a young teenager. … Read entire article »

Some Christmas Thoughts on Mary, The Mother of Our Lord

Miryam bath Heli, in one sense of the word, was the most important person that ever lived. We know her as Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was the daughter of Heli (bath Heli). She was very young and already betrothed to be married; but she was chosen by God to be the mother of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mary must have been shocked beyond imagination when the angel Gabriel appeared in her humble dwelling in Nazareth and began to speak to her. When he said, “Greetings, Highly Favored One, the Lord is with you: Blessed are you among women,” she was troubled and did not know what to think and apparently feared what might be coming, because the first thing Gabriel told her was not to fear. Then Gabriel … Read entire article »

Are You Smarter Than a Five Year Old?

I awoke this morning to find an envelope from my 5 year old labeled “To Dad” beside my head.  I was going to reach for my Bible first as is my habit, but felt that I should open his letter first.  I’m glad I did.  I spent a while just looking at the picture and marveling at the simplicity and truth in it.  I’m sharing it with you in the hopes that it will give you pause for thought.  It might be easier to print it if your screen is small. Click the following link to bring up the PDF image: A five year old looks at the cross Some Explanation of the Picture In the picture, on the right is a “bragger.”  He has a frown on his face. In the middle … Read entire article »

If Only You Knew: A Poem on Identity

This third poem was sent in with the request to publish it “Name Withheld.”  Even as a believer, people sometimes lose sight of who they are and what God says about them.  I’m posting it here as a reminder that even in the seeming comfort of the church there are still struggles.  People with real problems attend our churches and need to know HOW to find the answer in Jesus Christ. If Only You Knew Bitter, angry, alone, Scared of the unknown. Confused, messed up, hurt, Feeling less than a piece of dirt. ‘Why am I here?’ you cry, Awaiting for that longed reply. ‘where do I belong?’ you shout, feeling fear and nothing but doubt. Pushed, pulled, stretched, It’s all SO far fetched. which way do I turn? what is it I yearn? This and that, here … Read entire article »

Drunken Believer: A Poem About Alcohol

This second poem was sent in with the request to publish it “Name Withheld.”  It deals with a person who professes Christ as Lord and Savior but falls into the snare of alcohol.  I’m posting it here as a reminder that even in the seeming comfort of the church there are still struggles.  People with real problems attend our churches and need to know HOW to find the answer in Jesus Christ. Drunken Believer There is a time on Saturday night When you go home, you look a sight. You went out, you had some fun You drank a bit, in fact a ton. Pub to pub, vision blurred Words you spoke, they were slurred. Did I trip? Did I fall? You don’t know, you forgot it all. Now you’re torn, what to do? You love God, that … Read entire article »
